The 5-minute fix for “what's for dinner?”
Hi friend,
Welcome to issue #1! If you've ever opened ChatGPT, stared at the empty box, and thought "…now what?", you're in the right place.
Every week we'll send you one everyday problem, one prompt you can copy and paste to solve it, one idea for an AI helper you can set up, and one quick tip. No jargon. No tech skills needed. Just small wins.
Let's start with a problem almost all of us have.
This week's everyday problem: "What's for dinner?" (again)
It's 5:30 pm. You're tired. The fridge has half an onion, some chicken, and a mystery jar. Deciding what to cook — every single night — quietly eats up time and energy. Then you end up at the store buying things you already had.
AI is surprisingly good at this. You tell it what you have, what you like, and your budget, and it hands you a plan.
Your copy-paste prompt
Open ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Grok (any of them works). Copy everything in the box, fill in the parts in [brackets], and press enter.
You are a friendly, practical meal planner. Help me plan dinners for the next 5 weeknights. About me: - People I'm cooking for: [e.g., 2 adults and 1 picky 8-year-old] - Foods we love: [e.g., chicken, tacos, pasta] - Foods to avoid / allergies: [e.g., no mushrooms, no nuts] - Time I have to cook on weeknights: [e.g., 30 minutes max] - Weekly grocery budget for these dinners: [e.g., $75] - What I already have at home: [e.g., rice, eggs, frozen broccoli, half an onion] Please give me: 1. A simple 5-night dinner plan (one line per night, with cook time). 2. One combined grocery list, grouped by store section, leaving out what I already have. 3. An estimated total cost, and one swap to save money if I'm over budget. 4. One tip for prepping ahead on Sunday to make the week easier. Keep it simple and use everyday ingredients.
Why it works: You're giving the AI a role ("meal planner"), the facts about your life, and a clear list of what you want back. That's the secret recipe for almost every good prompt: who it should be + what it needs to know + what you want back.
Try this next: Reply to the AI with "Make night 3 vegetarian" or "My kid won't eat that — swap it." You can keep chatting until the plan fits.
Agent idea of the week: your "Sunday Reset" helper
A prompt is something you type once. An agent is a helper you set up once and it keeps working for you.
Here's a simple one you can build with tools you may already have:
- What it does: Every Sunday morning, it sends you next week's dinner plan and grocery list.
- How to set it up (the easy way): In ChatGPT, open a new chat, paste the prompt above with your details filled in, then use the Tasks / scheduled feature (or a recurring reminder in your AI app of choice) and ask: "Every Sunday at 9 am, run this meal plan and send me the grocery list."
- Level up later: Ask it to remember what you cooked last week so it doesn't repeat meals.
(A step-by-step, screenshot-by-screenshot version of this template is coming soon for members.)
Quick tip: Say "ask me questions first"
Not sure what details to give? End any prompt with:
"Before you answer, ask me 3 questions so you can do this well."
The AI will interview you, and the answer you get will fit your life much better. It's the easiest upgrade to any prompt.
That's it for this week! Try the meal-plan prompt tonight and email hello@promptsforreallife.com to tell us how it went — or what everyday problem you'd like us to solve next. We read every reply.
Small wins, every week.
